Haptic Own-Face Recognition

چکیده
This study investigated participants' ability to recognise a model of their own face from a series of distractor faces by touch. It also sought to discover whether or not an optimal stimulus orientation existed for the identification of target faces. Vision was found to differ significantly from each of the three haptic conditions (facing away from participant, facing towards participant, and learning, p < 0.01). Analysis of the three haptic conditions returned a main effect for recognition performance (p < 0.05), with performance differing significantly between away and learning conditions (p < 0.05), indicating the possible use of a feature-comparison search strategy. A greater number of target faces were correctly identified when faces were oriented towards the participants, contrary to the orientation in which a haptic representation of one's own face is naturally generated. This suggests that individuals may use a stored visual representation of their face when engaging in own-face haptic recognition.

Haptic face recognition and prosopagnosia.
Cases of cross-modal influence have been observed since the beginning of psychological science. Yet some abilities like face recognition are traditionally only investigated in the visual domain. People with normal visual face-recognition capacities identify inverted faces more poorly than upright faces. An abnormal pattern of performance with inverted faces by prosopagnosic individuals is chara...

In this study, a force reflection control structure is developed for the surgery training haptic system. In the surgery training haptic system, the surgical operation is cooperatively performed by a trainer and a trainee. The participation of each surgeon in the operation is established through their own haptic consoles. Although the operation is primarily performed by the trainee, the trainer ...
متن کاملSeeing a haptically explored face: visual facial-expression aftereffect from haptic adaptation to a face.
Current views on face perception assume that the visual system receives only visual facial signals. However, I show that the visual perception of faces is systematically biased by adaptation to a haptically explored face. Recently, face aftereffects (FAEs; the altered perception of faces after adaptation to a face) have been demonstrated not only in visual perception but also in haptic percepti...
متن کاملHaptic face identification activates ventral occipital and temporal areas: an fMRI study.
Many studies in visual face recognition have supported a special role for the right fusiform gyrus. Despite the fact that faces can also be recognized haptically, little is known about the neural correlates of haptic face recognition. In the current fMRI study, neurologically intact participants were intensively trained to identify specific facemasks (molded from live faces) and specific contro...
متن کاملFace Recognition for the Visually Impaired
The inability to recognize known individuals in the absence of audio or haptic cues severely limits the visually impaired in their social interactions and puts them at risk from a security perspective. In recent years, several prototype systems have been developed to aid this population with the face recognition task. This paper aims to provide an overview of the state of the art in this domain...
